The most promising 3D printed material technology in the future
Shenzhen Qihang Electronics Co.,Ltd | Updated: Jul 25, 2018

3D printing technology has developed rapidly, and it has good potential application value in the fields of aerospace, medicine, architecture and electronics. And all the materials related to 3D printing technology bring us unlimited new possibilities, and one day may shape our world. Great changes in materials are happening, you can imagine!

3D printing of bones, tissues and organs

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University gave a successful 3D printed bone method: mixing at least 30% of powdered natural bone in some special synthetic plastics and printing the desired shape with a 3D printer. In fact, 3D printing can be used to organize the signal-forming scaffold or living cell structure for the regeneration of defective regions. Through comprehensive repair, reconstruction and regeneration, 3D printing technology is responsible for the development of personalized treatments that combine aesthetics and function for defective patients, based on needs and design-driven manufacturing solutions.

As for tissues and organs, researchers at the Wake Forest Regenerative Medicine Institute have developed a specially designed 3D printer that has printed ear, bone and muscle structures. The Integrated Tissue and Organ Printing System (ITOP) stores biodegradable plastic-like materials that form the "shape" of the tissue and water-based gels that contain cells. In addition, a strong, temporary external structure is formed.

3D printing environmentally friendly materials

ABS plastics, mostly printed on FDM, are the most common plastics currently in use. However, this is not completely environmentally friendly and will release harmful gases when it melts. Additive Elements, a startup in Munich, has been working on safe bio-based materials and believes it is the future of the industry. In fact, the company is developing a material so that a person can print an object and, when done, can recycle and use it as the raw material for the next part they intend to print. The material, as they say, consists entirely of inert materials and food grade ingredients. Unprinted powder can be completely recycled, and the final product will be harmless when processed together with other waste.

3D printed concrete

Some companies have been working on large 3D printing of concrete and other types of buildings. According to a study by Research and Markets, in a publication called "Predicting the 3D Concrete Printing Market to 2021," because concrete 3D printing is becoming a more viable option for construction projects, many construction companies are using and will use concrete 3D printing. . The first of these companies is the French-based XtreeE. XtreeE is developing a fully functional 3D printing system. These include 3D printed concrete materials, a robot that can extrude materials, and software specifically for concrete 3D printing. To develop its 3D printing solution, XtreeE has been working closely with a number of partners, one of which is 3D software company Dassault Systèmes, who have created a 3D printing gallery together.
